EcoVillage Earns Audubon Certification
The Audubon Society of Northern Virginia (ASNV) has certified EcoVillage as an Audubon at Home Wildlife Sanctuary under the Audubon at Home program. ASNV President Bruce Johnson presented the community with an Audubon at Home Wildlife Sanctuary sign. After the ceremony, the ASNV naturalist, Cliff Fairweather, led a nature walk through the community.
Audubon at Home Wildlife Sanctuary certification is based primarily on identifying at least 10 out of a list of 30 sanctuary species using the property in some way. The species observed at EcoVillage for certification include goldfinch, eastern towhee, Carolina wren, catbird, Baltimore oriole, dragonfly, mason bee, eastern box turtle, eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly and pileated woodpecker. The use of environmentally friendly land management practices are another factor in certification.
"EcoVillage shares our goal of creating ecologically sustainable communities that provide space for wildlife and protect water quality through conservation-oriented land management," said Cliff Fairweather, adding, "They are a real model for other communities in Northern Virginia."
EcoVillage was founded in 1996 based on the twin ideals of people living together in community and living in harmony with nature. By clustering residences, the community preserves the majority of its acreage as open space, including meadow, forest and aquatic habitats hosting a wide variety of birds and other native animals. EcoVillage is working to reforest much of the common area of the property. Volunteers and student interns have helped develop environmental baselines and conducted monitoring of environmental impacts of human activities on the site.
